Motorcycle Collision at High Speeds Results in a Death.


On October 20, 2018, at approximately 5:30 a.m., officers from Operations Division West and members of the Tucson Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of N. 1st Avenue and E. Fort Lowell Road for a report of a serious injury motorcycle collision. Upon arrival, they located a pickup truck and motorcycle in the intersection. The motorcyclist was found lying on the ground and was immediately transported to Banner University Medical Center with life threatening injuries. Shortly after arrival at the hospital, the motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries and was sadly pronounced deceased. He was identified as 34-year-old Nicholas Rollins. Next of kin have been notified. Detectives with the Tucson Police Traffic Investigations Unit responded to continue the investigation. After speaking with witnesses and examining roadway evidence, detectives were able to determine that the motorcyclist was riding a 2004 Yamaha Sport Motorcycle eastbound on Ft. Lowell at a high rate of speed. As the motorcyclist approached the intersection at 1 st Avenue, he failed to stop for the red light and collided with a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup Truck that was traveling northbound through the intersection on a green light. The driver of the pickup showed no signs of impairment and did not appear to be exceeding the speed limit. It is unknown at this time if the motorcyclist was impaired. Detectives are continuing their investigation. No citations have been issued
